I learned that students should be provided an annual FERPA notification. 

FERPA also deals with providing students access to their student records not only concerns regarding privacy. 

Plan topics, speakers and activities during orientation to make students feel comfortable and a part of the school before they start classes. 

Giving students prompt repsonses is great customer service. 

Instructors play a vital role in student retention, especially in career colleges. 

Although students may be frustrated or feel negative about an academic situation, we can help students by showing a different perspective of the sitaution/ reframing the issue, along with validating their initial thoughts and feelings. 

It is important for faculty to identify early on the source of student's problems and stress to resolve the matter before students resort to dropping out. In addition faculty play an important role in changing student's perceptions of their academic status and their future. Therefore, we need to always be encouraghing and helpful!

Students want to believe the school's committment to supporting their academic endeavors, and they often take the time to see what services and resources schools offer when making their choice. In addition, retention can be defined in many ways, depending on one's department but it is important to have the same message when speaking with students.
