Self motivators have several characteristics. Adult learners were found to have different preferences for learning such as teacher directed discussions. 

Many components go into advising students

Make sure that the student can tell that you are actively listening and giving them enough time to say what they need to say. 

The student should feel like they are receiving the education they are paying for. 

This is similar to working with patients in that unrelated barriers can limit their success.

This gave me a better idea of how to break up a lecture especially when the attention span is only 18 minutes.

I learned some ways to help students introduce themselves and to get comfortable in the class

I thought the idea of a checklist is useful for making sure everything is covered. 

It is important to maintain professionalism during interactions and teaching. 

I learned that FERPA does not overrule all other acts/laws regarding student information i.e. military requests for information.
