Pardon the simplicity of my comment, but basically speaking "NO is NO", period.

We are obligated to protect students, faculty and staff from discrimination & bias based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Title IV renders these activities against the law; it is a means to keep our partners safe.

I find it interesting that we need a law to to provide basic human understanding and compassion for all.

Keeping students engaged "actively" enhances learning.

Cell phones, I-Pads, and social media are classroom challenges especially with younger students. If we set the bar high students will meet us there. Here is where the syllabus and classroom expectations, clearly explained, will define acceptable classroom behavior. Students will need to be held accountable for any deviation from classroom policy.

The ice breaker is an important tool in getting to know the students, and the students getting to know you. Explaining the syllabus on day one will set the stage for a successful classroom experience and the student's understanding of the course requirements & expectations.

Instructor enthusiasm is the cornerstone of student success. We must demonstrate a passion for what we teach, be knowledgeable with content, and demonstrate a sincere desire for the students acquisition of knowledge and their ability to apply it.

Faculty also experience a certain degree of frustration, students pickup on this. Refocusing yourself, looking back on what you have already accomplished and redirecting yourself to the task at hand will demonstrate to your students your commitment to their success.

Getting to know your students on a personal level, beginning class with some lighthearted moments, respecting them as individuals, and providing clear cut expectations for success are essential components for student retention. The dictator mentality simply does not work.

Understanding student characteristics, personalities, ethnic backgrounds and lifestyles can better assist the instructor to attempt to meet the student's educational goals.

Preparing lesson plans and a utilizing a variety of instructional delivery methods can keep a student's interest with an increased probability of achieving student learning outcomes.
