Be careful about acquiescing too quickly when a student expresses disappointment or disagreement. Often these situations offer a great teaching opportunity. The students dissatisfaction may be based on inappropriate perceptions. In these circumstances, you can help the student develop a broader perspective and understanding of why policies and procedures are put in place.

At a small campus you probably don't need surveys to find out what's happening. If not done properly, surveys can, at best, be a waste of time and, at worst, actually do harm.

What sort of changes have you made in your teaching methodology as a result of the survey? Do department heads use the results of this survey to provide guidance to the faculty? Are results ever part of a performance review?

Who is responsible for planning and delivering the in service sessions? What sort of results do you get from your phone calls and what do you do with the information you get from them?
