I agree that the fear of failure is a great motivator and we have to be able to help a student erase that fear so that withdrawal is not an option.  Other students are often good motivators for those who are thinking about withdrawal.  Sometimes their comments and actions tell those student that "Hey, I can do to" so it is important that you get your good students involved in helping those who are struggling.  Perhaps a mentoring program, study groups, discussion groups, etc.

I knew retention was important but this course actually made me stop and think about more ways in which I can be of assistance in this process.  By our actions we all can affect the way a student perceives the school and it's curriculum.  I have taken away some very interesting ideas for my future classes.

I agree when a student fails the course I am often wondering what could I have done differently to help this student.  If I have done everything I can then while I am bothered I know I did the best that I could for the student.  In the past I have encountered students who tell me how I have helped them pass and I take that information and apply it to my new students coming in.  Everyone is different so you must adjust accordingly.
