About me

I

started cooking rocks before cooking food for a living -- I was a geologist for many years before going back to school to become a Chef.  Then to my current career as a Chef Instructor. The current career feeds both my passion for food and my love of passing on what I know to the next generation, it is the best of both worlds!!

Activity

Positive reinforcement- can be very changing for the student that for the lack of a better word is "all thumbs" I look for any small item to start building i.e. even as small as being on time and in proper uniform - this has helped me turn around several student in my time teaching!

I find that Visual learners use color to help in the learning processes, i.e. memories tags and to high light information
I use color to convene information i.e. to draw the eye to follow a path I found that color has helped several student grasp concept that have eluded them in the past
I let the students know the rules the very first day and that if your late/unprepared - that put you at a disadvantage and disrupts the rest of the class - i explain that what you do in class is like practice and when you get a real job you will do the same thing i.e. late to class late to work: show up unprepared for class you will show up unrepair for work -- also this is not high school! in today world, you do either you will not have a job!

to help me with student names, I print out name plates for each student to give out, and have the student put them in front of their station – I also up date the name if the student goes by a nick name -- I use the name plates for the first few class periods
I talk to the student outside the class room and turn the situation around making the student the target of the disruption that he or she was doing, to show how this effectives the student and in turn how that action effects the rest of the class
I found it disturbing that you are still using the term disability! most of the issues discussed in this section are learning Differences not disabilities -- I know the fed are still using this term but they are at least 10years behine the research -- I would think we could be more current on the subject!
