As with any communication, tone and attitude are essential components.

It is important for the online instructor to be aware of the importance of motivation and helping students develop and sustain their own motivation.

Professional communication should be consistent, error-free, and void of texting or instant messaging (IM) language. Professional communication is consistent with the rules or regulations for communicating within the course, or other environments.

Time management may be the biggest factor in succeeding in an online course. Successful online students have to be proactive in their studies and take responsibility for their own learning.

Rubrics allow for standardized evaluation and make the evaluation process more simple and transparent. Rubrics provide students (through peer evaluation) and the instructor with a guide with which to provide feedback to others through formative or summative assessment. 

Student engagement is vital to a successful online course. Communication within the online community is a vehicle for student engagement. 

Setting the standards for civility and online etiquette is a necessary step toward building community through communication.
