I find that using multiple choice questions are not challenged by students as much as essay questions.

I've found that using soft skills creates a safe space for student. They are more comfortable asking questions. They don't fear providing incorrect responses.

I inform my students that my class is a safe space. There are no stupid questions.

Although I'm a visual learner, I have experienced having a student that was an auditory learner. This student had accommodations and would read her test questions out loud. This would help the student process the questions.

Providing students with testing that consists of demonstrating clinical skills can also identify challenges students face with application of knowledge.

I had a colleague that did to tell me that her elementary school teacher told her mother to not speak her mother language because it would only confuse her.

I currently have a clinical student from China who's been in the country less than two years. There are things she doesn't understand, and I can see other students reprimand her. I keep her close to me so I can be there to explain things she doesn't understand. I also talk to the other students and explain to them about being more understanding and explain things to their peer.

In the clinical settings, I have students that are already LPNs and others are new to healthcare. I also have students that are from other countries. For my students new to healthcare, I like to work with them individually to build their confidence. I do the same for my students new to the country. They're usually afraid of saying the wrong things or not understanding cultures.
