We as staff members have an opportunity to improve retention by making a connection with our students from the beginning at orientation throughout their entire careers at our school. We need to observe the key indicators of students that are having challenges and reach out to this student to show that we as a school care them and what them to be successful. We need to help them find solutions to their challenges to improve their experience. We also should coach them and allow the to have multiple choices to help them find solution so they can grow and gain… >>>

We as an institution have to understand what our students are going through and how it effects attrition. Many of our students are young and away from home for the first time. They have limited finances and have to balance time and money for the first time. They have limited support or sometimes no support mechanisms at all to help them cope with the daily stressors of life as a student. When stressed, because most of them do not have coping skills they tend to make poor choices that effect their attendance at school and that effect the schools attrition.… >>>

We have the ability to affect retention by addressing the students in a positive manner and challenging them to work hard. We also do not have to be soft or easy. Students expect a challenge and want to learn skills that will help them in the future career paths, they do not want to be entertained. They want to have a commitment from their school to educate them at the highest level and expect the material and the class environment to match what is described in the course catalog.
