I practice this orally in front of the classmates starting with myself. I'm trying to get them thinking about their career and future. I want them to think about what they will have to do to accomplish that. That part doesn't need to be announced. I want them to recognize that they need to apply themselves to get there. If someone hesitates with the short and long term goal part I normally intervene and give them an answer that everyone is working towards - Graduate and get yourself established in the automotive industry. Welcome to the world of evolution where we rely on technology every day of our lives. Technology is such a valuable resource to use when trying to accomplish a task. It's good to understand how to utilize it when needed and make due with our own judgment when it's not available. Technology is a learning tool, entertainment, diagnostic tool, transportation, etc. Hooray for technology.

Stress is powerful and overwhelming. It's a problem that leads to emotion that can cause a blur in ones own judgment. We all go through stress. It can be recognized in ones demeanor, body language, facial expressions and tone of voice. Would you view stress as a problem? When we have a problem shouldn't we find resolution to that problem? How can you give confidence back to one's own abilities to learn how to cope with their stress? Ask yourself these questions and strategize.
The first impression you leave on a student will greatly determine their comfort zone with you. If you can find a way to impact them some how with in the first 15 minutes of meeting them, then retention is very achievable.

On the first day of class I like to learn more about the students I will be interacting with. I ask for their Name, Where their from, Hobbies and Goals (both short and long). It gives me an opportunity to see where their mind is at and to find something we can relate to in order to help me have their attention when giving a lecture. I look at it as an ice breaker for the retention process.
Is it possible to over motivate a student or students to the point where they feel everything they do is correct?

Students do not come to class to hear about your personal life. All motivation and rapport will be lost if the students feel you are lost.

What do you do when a student thinks the group has leadership and forgets that its a team effort?

After getting to know the class and the class getting to know each other. Would you recommend that the class picks their own group or should I do it? I feel there is Pro's and Con's to both sides.
