I wish students knew to report learning challenges earlier, but I also want to be the kind of instructor who notices and supports different learning preferences and styles to lessen the possible burden on students with learning challenges if I can. I also want to consider more ways of make instruction interactive and applied rather than lecture and other passive forms, which research shows is not as beneficial for the student.

I did not know as much about encouraging and allowing students to utilize their first language as a reference for English or other languages as a way to reference and support the new language acquisition process! I am excited to learn more about this and see how I can incorporate support and resources for students in a program where English is the expected language for instruction, testing, etc.

The largest thing I took from this was the concept of intercultural communication and that it needs to be incorporated into my classroom. It is something I focus on when I work with patients at the hospital, but I had not considered how many of those principles would be needed and are more important for the classroom before. I also appreciated the reminder to respond to content of comment/feedback instead of the tone/style/delivery. It can happen so quickly that my cultural training and expectations are not met when speaking with students or others, but the reminder to focus on content… >>>

I've learned that stereotypes do not provide the shortcuts we hope for when we employ them since we all belong to so many different groups. It's true for me and my students. I want to become better with technology and the tools my university utilizes so I can give my students choices and different opportunities to learn in different ways.
