Keisha, Great post! You make valid points regarding the importance of communication and content delivery. Both areas should work in concert with each other. You are also right, the instructor must be active in the online course. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Bill, You make great comments. Yes, the learning objective should drive the technology. You don't want a barrier to learning be the technology. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Jim, It is nice if the technology has multiple uses and has consistent use throughout the institution. Students do become frustrated when they have to learn a technology that is so specific in its use and they never will use again. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Todd, Would you create a rubric that incorporates the criteria. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Todd, These are great ideas! I use texting but I don't use Twitter, I am going to use it in my next course. I also have used a "posting" wall very similar to Pinterest. You may want to try it. The site i padlet.com Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Dear Hopeless Dreamer, You are right. First the millenials believe they can say whatever they want because "we have free speech". This is problematic on so many fronts. We now make all of our freshmen take a professional development session to "professionalize" their social media. We also have all our business students create a professional LinkedIn account because of so many networking opportunities it provides. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Lisa, That is true, but you don't want to discard the discussion that takes place in a f2f course because it is online. Discussion, even if done through boards and chats can give you an insight of what students know. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Lisa, If you think about it, a facilitator has many roles regardless of the delivery. As a facilitator, we try to provide what each student needs to learn. Technology does make this much more manageable. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Lisa, Nice post! You are right about trust. This comes from consistency and expectations. We keep talking about holding students to certain expectations, we have to do that to ourselves and students have a right to have certain expectations of us! Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Discussion Comment
Natasha, I agree and I think sometimes blogging gives students a feeling of freedom they don't necessarily find in discussion. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
