Angela, No, you don't have much creativity in your course but that is ok; you have to use the assessment that best matches your objectives. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Patty, Great post. I think you are right, it does give you a better overall picture. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Dale, It is interesting that this was brought up. A colleague and I are doing research in this area regarding regular testing as part of their grade. Literature suggests it does. . . stay tuned. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Dale, True, subjective exams do take longer to grade and add a level of subjectivity. I use this type of assessment in my online course as I feel better about the integrity of the answer. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Angela, True, don't you think using a variety of types of evaluation helps determine a students learning? Your type of question should match expectations of the course/unit/chapter. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Patty, You are right! You have to test on the content. The content of the assessment should match the objectives of the material covered. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Dale, You need to use tools that are dependable technology wise as well as well developed instruments. I use a tool called Respondus that helps me create better tests in my LMS. I also look to the publishers regarding testing but I don't depend on them. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Dale, I agree with you. I like to say the courses should be student-centered/ student responsible. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Dale, You are right. The data can tell you the story of what needs to be reviewed. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Patty, I have a rule in my syllabus that a student must look in the syllabus and other tools then they have to post their question in a specific discussion board before they can email me. If another student answers the question in 24 hours, they get participation points. It does reduce my email. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
