Albert, What great strategies. I find it refreshing when instructors find creative ways to engage students to guide them through the learning process. You may want to look at the at remind101. It is a great IM app. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
ROBERT, I think it is smart to meet with the student to develop an improvement plan to help students improve the skills that will make them successful in everything! Great strategy. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Natalie, Your strategies are right on target. It is important that you have your students utilize the resources that are available to your students. You are to guide them to those resources. We have to be aware as instructor the need to teach students to use feedback for their improvement. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Albert, Again, you are the facilitator. You want the student to be responsible and proactive in their learning needs. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Albert, You have resources that will provide that needed extra help students needed. I applaud you for investigating the tools and knowing their roles in the learning process. Let the tools do what they can do and you can guide students to those tools that will address a student's specific need. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Michael, That is a good question. With the short class period it is hard to give students "wiggle" room to develop good communication skills. You will have to provide the students strong, constructive feedback that complements the expectations in the syllabus. You will have to model the behavior yourself. The short class period is indeed a challenge and you will have to remind the students there is small room for error. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Annabel, These are great strategies. Do you continually refer to them throughout the course? Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Lindsey, Good, do you provide specific policies in your syllabus about rules of communication including appropriate language? Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Kathleen, You are right. I actually saw a syllabus that provided detailed examples of a good discussion and a good reply and a bad discussion and a bad reply. You can post policies all day long but if you don't hold students accountable it means nothing. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Albert, You make a great point. Students need to be able to disagree or provide constructive feedback to each other without taking it personally. You are right, you have to provide the example and the leadership but students don't know how to debate an issue without being argumentative. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
