Paula, What does essays aren't always easy? I don't know if I would agree with students preferring objective evaluations. I think they think they are are easier because they have choices. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Paula, I don't know what you are saying. Would you allow a student to post a discussion reply like the one you just posted? Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Paula, What do you mean student body? How does that play a role in your assessment tools? What is platform. Please elaborate. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Antonio, Create your discussion then create a rubric by which you will assess them on that applying of knowledge (if that is part of your assessed objectives) That would work for you. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Sheila, You need to build the rubric based on your objectives you are measuring then use it to measure your subjective assessment. Your rubric should reflect what they need to learn based on your course or unit objectives. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Antonio, I agree you have to balance workload with your assessments. I subjective assessment means very little if you can't get around grading it and providing appropriate feedback. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Sheila, That is true, as an educator we can look at the results and see where we may need to improve in our teaching. It should be used by us to alter our teaching. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Antonio, That is true, and your summative assesses should be the gauge that. If your outcomes say they need to be able to apply to real life that is how that material should be assessed. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Sheila, That is true, the variables you mentioned must be considered to design an appropriate assessment. You want to give them ample opportunity to show their knowledge and/or skill. I do think we have to be very careful about deferring the students learning style. You really want a student to be able to learn in a variety of ways. Learning should be uncomfortable to an extent. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Antonio, You make great points. Technology should be platform agnostic (I love that term). You want the student to spend time learning the content not fighting the barrier of technology. Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
