It's important as educators to look past a students disability

The Solomon Amendment is new, and rather interesting to me. Apparently the military can retrieve certain information about students 17 and over.

Interestingly, FERPA rights do not extend beyond a student’s death, so the records of deceased students may be released. However, living former students must provide written consent for their records to be disclosed. Additionally, employees who are also students do not automatically have access to their own records; they must follow the same FERPA procedures as other students to gain access.

Each school/institution should have a clear understanding of what information about a student can be disclosed to remain compliant.

From what I understand, FERPA is essentially the education system's version of HIPPA. It's important to maintain the trust of our student and our professional integrity

"The overwhelming majority of sexual assaults in the postsecondary environment involve acquaintances or individuals who know each other" which I thought was interesting since we've always been engrained with that 'stranger danger' mentality growing up.

Title IX investigations aren't confined to incidents on campus or at campus-related events. Any situation involving a member of the educational community that causes ongoing distress may warrant a Title IX investigation.

Institutions still need to investigate sexual misconduct if they have information indicating it has occurred, even if the victim chooses not to file a formal complaint. They must also ensure that the affected individual is provided with a safe and supportive environment for learning and living.

I knew more or less about Title IX, but the detailed explanation as well as how VAWA and the Clery Act relate to it was new to me. It turned out a lot more informative that I thought. It's important information for us as faculty to know and understand so we can be a part of the solution going forward.
