About me

Just a little about my family. I have two adult children. My son lives in Chattanooga, TN. My daughter lives with my husband and I.  Both of my children are precious to me.

I have taught every grade but 5th. Somehow I missed that grade. Middle school was my least favorite. The high school students and fourth were my favorites. While teaching school, I became interested in nursing.  The tug would not stop until I gave in to the pull. Since I had a BS degree, I thought I could get into a RN program readily, nope.  So I decided to go to Simi Valley Adult School's VN program.  After graduation, I worked in a skilled nursing facility. I loved the geriatric patients and had the desire to give them my best because they deserved to be respected and appreciated. While working I was approached by a dear nurse educator and asked if I was interested in teaching nursing assistants that she was going to retire.  I did and worked for Simi Valley Adult School CNA and VN programs until I finished my RN and then became a Program Director of the CNA and HHA programs. I chose to take a retirement incentive after 14 years with the Simi Valley Unified School District.

I have worked in several VN programs both theory and clinicals but my favorite area is in the clinical setting.  I feel fortunate to work for Concorde Career College and have continued to grow my teaching skills.

I love teaching and I love nursing.  It doesn't seem to be work when I am in my element.

Activity

I is important the learners recognize the presence of the instructor and that the instructor is responsive.

Online teaching has many components.  The role of the facilitator or online instructor is complex.  Instructors must have a good understanding of their role in the online course.

For post conference with the nursing student, the students share experiences and what they have learned.  I will develop a rubric that can be given to them for review and I will use to critique the informative presentation.

I want to create a tool that can be for shift report and will include concise, clear information.

Writing is important in nursing and is a weak area for most students.  I will create a tool for providing a summary of what the students' experienced or learned for the day.

I noted several methods or techniques that I can tailor to the program in which I teach.  I will freshen my approach for orientation and hope to present a positive, open environment for students.  At the same time, set high standards for work presented.

This course was helpful for me.  It is important to know what the reasons are the student is in the program.  It is easy to just assume that most students are in the program for the same reasons.  Getting to know the individual's reasons can be what can be utilized for encouragement when events occur.  Life will not stop happening just because the individual is in school.  So it is important to know the students intrinsic reasons for wanting to be successful.  However, it is important to maintain the professional boundary that is necessary to be effective.

I would be interested to review other persons comments regarding this issue.

Thanks,

Kathy

The condition was given different terms during earlier periods of time.  The terminology use with an understanding of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has evolved.  World War I, World War II, Vietnam War, Desert Storm and the Iraq War had a role in the study of PTSD as military personnel were in war and returned from was.  Reseach lead to psychologist studying the impact of war on the soldier.  Today the scientific knowledge of PTSD broaden the realization of the truism.  PTSD is recognized as a ligitimate mental disorder.

The student in a clinical environment must meet the approved objectives… >>>
