I like Elizabeth's mention of developing "People Skills," in students through collaborative groups facilitating critical thinking skills.  Dental Hygiene requires developing a rapport with the patient as well as practicing professional skills.  So the more we as instructors can set up environments that support both the people skill development as well as the professional competency, the better we can nurture and grow both skills at once.

I really liked Elizabeth's Inspirational Quotes!

I think Rubrics standardize the expectations and attempt to take the subjectivity out of the grading.  Students can follow clear guidelines, even though, in my experience, the instructor will have to review the Rubric in class.

Flipped Classrooms have research that intimates that its approach may yield the best results as far as student success and competency with the material.  The concept does require more out of the box thinking from instructors, but it is worth the effort and time as the students seem to connect with the process better.

I am a big fan of active learning because, in my opinion, most students out there now lean towards the non traditional student.  They learn by doing and actively engaging with manipulatives and each other.  I used to compete with Sesame Street type stimulation where there was music and fun for every concept, now instructors compete with fast moving UTube videos and social media.  Taking the time to make the concepts fun and engaging is well worth the instructor's time, especially in career courses where active application of skills is part of the plan.

I understand that innovation in the classroom as well as online is a component of retaining the information taught. If the instructor can tickle many senses during the instruction time, that will support student's recalling that information.  I use mini white boards for quick quiet answers to questions, mixer index card matching games, yoga breaks, and drawing thoughts in a drawing book as we go through material.

I like that Ben Franklin quote: "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail"

Students must be encouraged to make a plan for success in the course.  To include time management and goal setting for each day.  If the plan does not require effort and a bit of sacrifice, it may not have the necessary rigor to meet all expectations.

The 7 Principals are straightforward but need to be incorporated into concrete practices by instructors:

  • encourage interaction between student and instructor (make sure class is not a one way communication, students need to be producers of information not just
  • >>>

Meeting students where they are at includes their comfort with technology and social media.  Incorporating video messages, getting a Google phone number, and communicating clearly and concisely is my plan at the beginning of this new course.  I am sure the students will let me know what might make their success in this new course more probable.

Clear communication will support efficiency in the course and help students feel more secure about their progress.  Affirming and assuring students through feedback is important and will help motivation when the going gets challenging.  Professional clear communication modeling gives students examples of how to conduct themselves in professional settings.

I think the idea that students are very comfortable with videos rather than having to read an e-mail announcement.  I will get more comfortable with making videos to underline points or make an announcement.  I am trying to meet the students where they are at and increase my communication quality.

Being innovative about the way you present information will support retention of important points.  Especially if you tickle all the learning styles.  Definitely plan and practice a demonstration.  This planning will increase your confidence as an instructor.
