Record keeping, communication and resolving conflicts are critical to managing a distance learning course and reducing attrition.  Effective teachers communicate with students via timely feedback through email, chats (public and private) and also by maintaining records of assignments and communication.

Asynchronous (anytime) and synchronous (real time - chats) discussions are important for engaging students.  It is important for the instructor to consider time zones, class times and student schedules for class discussions.  Feedback should be positive and build confidence and encourage participation.  Personal email to the student should be used for constructive criticism of student work or participation below standard.

It is important to share a brief biography of yourself and request that students provide their own to facilitate your relationship with students.

Undersstanding and familiarizing myself with the CMS employed by my District is paramount.  Instructors must also provide access to course content and timely feedback to better improve the student learning experience.
