Studies have shown that the human factor in the learning environment is the most import factor in student retention. Being enthusiastic and excited about the subject matter will help motivate student learning. Positive reinforcement shows a 40 percent increase in student achievement.

Understanding the characteristics of my students will enable me, as an instructor, to identify their needs. Their motivation for taking this course is important to know. It will help establish the trust relationship that adult learners desire. Adult learners face fears like will they be able to acquire a new skill and become successful after being layed off a good paying factory job? While younger adults will be more focused on peers and socializing and belonging, more mature adults need to feel safe in the classroom and feel confident that they will succeed.

While it is important to vary the delivery style for students, it is imperative to cover the core material. I learned there are different ways people learn and different lecture formats to be used. Teaching will allow me the opportunity to experiment with different ways of presenting the material that will be creative and help students comprehend, use, retain and apply in the field of aviation maintenance.

Not only will I be prepared to covered the material in the course, I will practice my personal guidelines of professional conduct: I am FIRM, FAIR and FRIENDLY. I am excited to meet the students for the first time and am happy for the opportunity to provide a safe, comfortable, inviting but professional environment for their future in the aviation industry.

The adage : "If we fail to plan, we plan to fail," is true for every learning arena. As a new instructor, I will be prepared for the course I will be teaching ahead of time. Being early for class every day is in MY personal syllabus. I will post daily objectives and ensure students know the relevance of applying those objectives, to their future career. Syllabus will provide the course outline and I will teach the CORE or trunk of the learning tree, with assignments being the branches.

INSTRUCTOR ROLES, COMPENTENCIES, STYLE, PROFESSIONALISM AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT:

Excellent course! As a new instructor I need to develop my roles as a Model, Manager and Motivator. From the video I learned if I love the subject matter and love the students, it will give me credibility from the get go. Explaining my high expectations and clear guidelines will let them know what I need to observe.  That includes being on time for class. I also am the leader and need to display confidence. Components of Modeling, being a good Manager and Motivator include my dress, hygiene, language, conduct and timeliness.… >>>

Although it is tempting to ask a person with a disability about their medical condition, it is best to refer them to the right people. If an accommodation is requested by the student it makes it easier for the instructor to assist. However it is never appropriate to suggest someone has a disability because they are struggling in class.

Universal Design makes it easier for institutions to plan ADA compliant devices such as ramps.

Reasonable accommodations can be made to the appropriate ADA school representative by the student w a disability.

Psychological/Mental disabilities are included in the protected class under the ADA.

I learned that if Federal funding is allowed to ONE student, it must be available to all students. Specifically during the 1980's; Pell Grant citing. ADA compliance in 1990 and amended in 2008 grants rights to disabled students to have access with reasonable accommodations under Title II for public institutions and Title III for private ones.

Although students with disabilities only have the "right" to access, the spirit of the Law is such that institutions should accommodate students needing assistance as much as possible.
