What I’ve learned is that encouraging my students and consistently showing support helps them feel confident that I’m truly in their corner. From the very start of each class, I make it a priority to get to know each student and understand what drives them. Based on my experience as an employer, I’ve also learned that every person is different—and what motivates one student may not motivate another.

An instructor should engage students in a variety of ways to make the learning material interesting and meaningful. Building rapport with each student is essential. Students’ interest and focus in a subject are also influenced by the instructor’s commitment to delivering the course material effectively.

In this chapter, I learned that building rapport and creating an enjoyable classroom environment can improve student attitude, strengthen engagement, and reduce the pressure students may feel during class. I also learned the importance of being flexible and open to planning meaningful make-up days or special activities that motivate students, while remaining receptive to the types of celebrations or events that are most meaningful to them.

Retention isn’t just about keeping students enrolled—it’s about keeping them motivated, supported, and progressing toward graduation and licensure. In any school or training program, life happens: work schedules change, transportation issues pop up, family responsibilities grow, and confidence can drop if students feel behind. The good news is retention can be improved with consistent systems, strong relationships, and early intervention.

The learning needs of older and younger students can differ significantly. Grouping students strategically encourages peer support and collaboration, which is an effective way to keep everyone engaged and interested in the material.

I understand that individuals learn in different ways, particularly when there are age differences among students and variations in their prior learning experiences.

From this course, I learned the importance of being patient and approachable to ensure students fully understand each chapter. I also learned that keeping students engaged and tailoring the learning experience to meet individual needs is essential for their success.
