Correct management of your classroom is imperiative to a successful learning enviornment. If you allow your students to behave in an unprofessional manner, this behavior impacts the other students learning experience as well as their own.Since I deal mainly with adult learners, I open my rules explanation with,"since we are adults, I do not feel we will experience any unprofessional behavior". If someone starts talking during a lesson, I will say, "We have a limited amount of time to share this important information and I, as well as your classmates, need your full attention. If this is not successful, I will… >>>

In my 20 years at this institution I have taught students with learning and physical disabilities. We have highly trained personel that design their accomodations. For the most part the statement "they are not as different as they are the same as other students is very true. They are here for the same reasons as most of our students, too learn. If someone is willing to learn, I feel it is an instructors job to teach them. All students need a little extra attention from time to time depending on their learning abilities and style of learning. Generally I treat them equally,… >>>

As a trade school instructor, my students are predomitely hands on learners. These students need learning scaffolds=basic outlines to have a map to follow to perfect the operational standards of our school. They are often not skilled in decoding or pruning techniques and they must have concrete instruction to learn what they need to retain.

When teaching, it is very important to relate your experiences to what you are teaching them so they gain understanding as to why they need the information you are presenting.
My method for increasing student retention is structured and resonably successful. #1, lecture covering key points of the lesson while writing student notes on the board and encouraging participation and questions. #2. active student participation demo's,I demo part of an operation and then have the students duplicate what I do. When they are done we go to the next section of the operation. I think it is very important to complete one complete segment a day. #3.Have the students "re-code" their notes.

I believe it is evry Instructors job to improve the lives of his students. Dispalying a positive, freindly,& helpful attitude in class is very important to the students. Also holding them to high standards helps prepare them for later life and gives them a barometer of how they are doing. Helping them aquire the skills needed to succede is basically job one, but, you also have to show them you care about their personal outcome.

I agree with Truit Gaines, put aside all negative thoughts from your daily life. When I get out of my car in the morning, I will see several students on my way into the building, I greet every student with a smile. If I know the student, I will ask what class they are in and ask how they are doing. If a student is having difficulty, I will ask if there is anything I can do to help.

We have various student activities at our campus. We have a student bike show with various vendors.Since it is during Daytona bike week, several out-of-state freinds and relatives attend this event with our students. We have open houses with students invited to attend. We have as many student oriented functions as possible.

I agree with Mike fully, our admissions rep.s do a good job of preparing our incoming students. We are faced with detrimentally high unemployment in the Orlando area, about 12.5%. The lack of employment in our area is hurting our retention, and, this in turn is not really something the admissions rep.s can do much about.

I have the obstacle of immeadiacy. I can keep this under control by prioritising my tasks. The only thing that will interfere with my plan is a procrastinator. This obstacle drives me nuts because these people hardly ever get anything done, increasing my list of things to do, and destroying my carefully constructed plan.
