About me

My name is Joey Barker and I am a Curriculum and Instructional Management Coordinator (CIMC) in Union County Public Schools. My district is located just beside Charlotte, NC. I am in my first year as a CIMC, prior to this, I have been an Instructional Coach, Instructional Technology Facilitator, and a Business and Marketing Teacher. I think technology is incredibly important to teaching and am always looking to learn new ways to help use technology and integrate it into teaching.

When evaluating and revising a course, it is important to have multiple sources of input and not just one.

 

Rubrics allow for consistency in student work and a good way to evaluate all students equally. Rubrics are more than a checklist and should include learning objectives and criteria needed to earn certain credit.

 

In an online course, the syllabus must be dynamic. It cannot be flat like a traditional course syllabus.

 

Consistency is key in an online course. A great way to accomplish this is by utilizing templates. It is important to always have another user test out a course/template before having students complete it, to make sure that the design will work for students.

 

I learned about several typical types of online learners - noisy, quiet, disruptive, intimidators, and procrastinators, as well as strategies to address them. Online learning can be similar to a traditional classroom as learners are unique and have their own learning styles and preferences. I found the tips to reach the procrastinators useful because they push items to the last minute and then have excuses. The suggestion of "Set up alternative arrangements for submitting assignments, or communicating with you in case of technical problems" is a great idea to help with some of those issues.

 

I learned when to use asynchronous and synchronous discussions in an online course. I also liked the idea of only responding to larger topics as an instructor as compared to each individual, to increase collaboration and communication amongst course participants.

 

I learned when projecting your presence to students it is important to include credentials and professional background as well as providing some personal information such as hobbies and special interests. Online learning can be less social than face-to-face instruction, so it makes sense to share professional experience to let students know that you understand the information you are teaching. Including personal interests is a good idea as well because it can help you make connections to students.
