I learned that motivation is closely tied to relevance, connection, and encouragement. Students are more likely to stay engaged when they understand how the material supports their personal or career goals and when they feel valued by their instructor. I plan to apply this by creating learning experiences that connect course content to real-world applications, recognizing small wins, and maintaining consistent positive reinforcement to keep students inspired and focused.

I learned that keeping the focus on students means recognizing their individual needs, motivations, and challenges throughout the learning process. It reminded me that teaching is not just about delivering content but about creating meaningful connections that help students feel supported and capable. I plan to apply this by being more intentional about listening to students, offering timely feedback, and making sure each learner feels valued and encouraged to reach their goals.

From this module, I’ve learned that effective student retention requires a proactive and holistic approach that addresses both academic and non-academic factors influencing persistence. Strategies such as early identification of at-risk students, building strong advising relationships, and creating a sense of belonging are critical. I also found it valuable to consider how communication, engagement, and follow-up directly impact a student’s decision to stay enrolled.
