Being open and supportive of all of your students, and accepting them and their differences, is the key to differentiated instruction. Making sure that you are aware of any stereotypes that you may have from your own past experiences can help you as the instructor make your students feel empowered and able to learn in your classroom. Student choice in process and assessments will lead to better understanding of content at any level of education.

I learned that there are multiple federal laws that can supercede FERPA and if federal agencies request access to student's personal information, that their identities and need for the information should be verified before releasing the information and should also be recorded. I also learned that if a teacher wants to record their lesson and post it on social media, then the teacher needs to get written permission to do that from the students.

I learned that FERPA coverage ends when a student/former student passes away. I f an alumni no longer attends the institution, then their information may be released with proper permission. There are also certain guidelines for when there may be possible conflicts of interest.

I learned that there are certain instances when an institution may release information without a student's permission, but for the most part, it is done only with the student's permission. Students also have the right to waive the disclosure of Directory information if they so choose.

I have learned that student's personal and educational information needs to be protected. If released or shared with persons other than the student, this may be a violation of the laws pertaining to student privacy. Violations may be reported to the Department of Education with varying levels of consequences.
