I think that one of the most important things an instructor can do is maintain their accessability. I have hade more students come up to me at break and lunch for help than I have during class. This starts the ball rolling, you help one student word gets around quick that your willing to help. I know we cant spend every lunch with the students, but I think more instructors should get out of the lounge and get involved other than in class. But thats just my opinion!!!
So many times I see classes come into a class room for a lecture and they imediately go into the "its time for a nap" mode. This is when the instructor has to change what the students expect. there were alot of examples of this in this course. Pick one... Pick two... use them all and turn that nap time into something they remember.

The other day a student was sleeping in my class. I stopped class and told him that he had to keep awake. I gave him suggestions on how to do this. The student jumped out of his chair and told my that he had a medical problem and I didn't care about him. When I got to him as he was trying to leave the building I told him I do care. I explained to him that I have a son with the same disability, I also told him that I'm the kind of person that looses sleep over things… >>>

In my 8 years of teaching I've learned several things, but one of the things I'll never forget is that each instructor should be 10% advisor, 10% friend, 10% comedan, 20% disiplinarian, 30% actor, 20% roll model. You may not agree wih the percentages I gave to this, but thats what makes us all different. The fact is that you cant be JUST one of these. You have to have a little of all of them if yopu want to suceed in this industry,

I feel it is important to let the students know that you (as an instructor) are human too! I've seen students come into a class and tremble if they get called on to awnser a question, and in some cases just to talk in front of a group. Getting the students comfortable or relaxed in the class room situation is an important first step in the students success.
