About me

I am a dedicated professional focused on student success with 30 years of experience in the field of Education. My undergraduate degree was in English with a minor in Psychology. I earned a Master of Science degree in Educational Psychology, focusing on counseling adolescents and adults in the areas of mental health, career, and academics. At the higher education level, I held the following positions: Area Coordinator for Residence Life, Personal and Academic Counselor, Director of Career Services, Director of the Academic Center for Excellence, Director of College Counseling, Career Counselor, Director of Career Planning, and currently serving in the role of College Counselor at the Arizona College of Nursing - Tampa. I am also a Nationally Certified Counselor with the National Board of Certified Counselors, a Certified Wellness and Health Coach, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor – Intern, and a Certified Online Instructor. I take a holistic approach in assisting students to be successful in their academic and career pursuits.

Interests

i am an avid reader of both fiction and non-fiction literature and belong to two book clubs. i also enjoy spending time with my family which includes two pets: a dog and a cat.

Activity

Thinking outside the box can lead to innovative programs. In my work it is important when creating programs to keep the end-user in mind as well as organizational goals.

There were a lot of great resources in this section. The difference between learning challenges and learning preferences made it clear what the differences were. Using multiple methods to teach a concept that will appeal to students with difference learning preferences. Using rubrics and portfolio and another way to assess student learning.

 

Even if the academic program in in English only, it would be great to have a bi-lingual instructor or student who could assist students with understanding.

 

I appreciate the strategies given or inclusivity. Again, it is important not to make assumptions but to get to know students as individuals. Pre-screening materials for bias or any content that could cause harm is a good practice.

 

Each student needs to be seen as an individual with different learning styles. Learning needs to be a dynamic process versus a linear process. Teach students how to connect new information to existing information.

 

The first week of activities allows for more student bonding and the reinforcement of information that is important to the students' success. Faculty play a key roll in first-day, first impressions of how academics are going to be. Faculty can plan activities in class so students can get to know their classmates.

 

 

Faculty involvement in orientation can allow for faculty to start building rapport with students. Facilitating students to exchange phone numbers or creating chat groups to support one another is a great way to build cohesion and a source of support.

 

I liked the idea of having students move to various locations on campus to learn about the different offices and how they can help. I also think it is important to have current students be at orientation to start conversations in order to connect the new students to campus.

 

Getting an education is a means to an end in that students want to change their standard of living and enjoy their work day more by doing something that is challenging and brings them joy. I was so happy to read the recommendation NOT to use the words 'job placement." The words "job search assistance' are so much more appropriate. Also, it is extremely important to see throught he eyes of a student to improve customer service.

 

There are many programs that support student retention. Offering support programs increases student success. Students need to be made aware of the resources in Orientation, but since so much information is given during Orientation, the information students need should be repeated.
