Rubrics give a student general guidelines for assignment completion. After grading an assignment it can be a good idea, time permitting and how far into a course a student is, to leave comments on how a student may improve their work in specific areas. Jim

Along with on-line interaction I meet with students once a week in class. Every class meeting I go over the syllabus and reinforce proper netiquette and course expectations. Jim
Class size ranges from 16 to 20 students.
I use e-mails, sent to individual students who may be at risk for various reasons, to develop a one-on-one relationship with the student.
The varied use of graphics and the use of pictures help to keep the learner's attention.
Thank you for the good ideas. We also have a good student services department here at our school. I am now having the Student Services Department intervene when a student ignores my messages or instructions.
The on-line instructor must be available at consistent times on a daily basis and insures that he/she keeps a consistent schedule. The instructor must also promptly answer any student questions and attend to student needs in a timely manner. If the student is having problems with course material the student must also interact with the instructor in a timely manner. What can the instructor do, on-line to encourage the students to interact with the instructor before problems arise
