Documentation of counselling chats are critically important. Some students may be challenging the authority of the instructor, knowing the policies and procedures will be very helpful in redirecting students as needed.
Having asynchronous discussions give equal opportunity for each student to participate. Instructor's timely feedback is important to encourage continued student engagement.
Posting a brief Biography I believe is a great idea. Not only does it build the credential of the instructor, but also projects to the learners that the instructors are real, work/ed in the industry, and have formal education to teach the course.
In the online environment, since there will not be an instructor F2F to ask questions, I should anticipate quaestions and address them before they arise. All the more that it is important that my CMS should be well organized and complete.
I like the 15-20 minute blocks of mini-lectures. This should help keep the attention of students. The same with using a variety of teaching methods.
Learning all the students names on day-1 is very important. I am fortunate that I am very good at this! Students really value knowing that I made an effort from the first day to know them individually and make them feel important, and that they are "not just another number".
Planning and preparation are essential to making a great first impression. It projects a professional and well organized instructor.
To not attempt to prove to the class that you are the smartest person in the room, and to make sure the students know that you care for them.
