Connecting with the students is important. Using different teaching styles to connect with the students is very beneficial and one can learn a great deal about the students learning styles.

I would set the expectations for the first day and introduce a few ice breaker activities to help ease any student nervousness and be yourself. 

Being Prepared is the key. As soon as you receive your course assignment, one should begin reviewing the course material and content and to make sure that the necessary materials are available in order to ensure success. One must project confidence on the first day to calm students' nerves regarding the course. Learning student names can go a long way. In addition, very important to plan lessons accordingly to ensure student success and be sure to make the lessons impactful and meaningful for the students.

Being a role model to the students. Demonstrating professionalism, knowledge and remembering the three major roles, model, manager and mtoivator.
