Activity

I like your approach. By asking a question after offering the information you give the student the opportunity to consider all of their options. Many representatives immediately go into a financial aid discussion whereas asking a question like this allows the rep to understand what the student is thinking and then customize their response appropriately. Thanks Tiffany! Dr. Jean Norris
Great point! Think of how empowered the student feels when they find their own solutions to their challenges. If you can provide additional resources that your school offers after hearing the students' solution you can provide added support to that decision. Thank you for your post. Dr. Jean Norris
Tiffany, I agree, a question like that can not only help to discover the student's support network and where the student is in their process, but can also open the student up to sharing their story. How do you follow up with the student that gives you a simple 'no' answer? Dr. Jean Norris
I agree Tiffany, it's very important that we use our people skills to best understand our students and to partner with them as they make the right decision for their future. How important do you think attitude is in this equation? Dr. Jean Norris
Discussion Comment
Great awareness Mickie, teams need the implementer types! Dr. Jean Norris
Great point Mickie, most people do like to contribute when decisions are being made that impact them. How can you create an environment of collaboration at your workplace? Dr. Jean Norris
Kelley, So it sounds like you have some baby boomer influence in your communication which can help you with that generation. How do you adapt for the millenial generation? Dr. Jean Norris
I can't think of a specific analogy but this is where the balance between management and leadership comes to play because to stay motivated to lead we need to keep in mind the management style that will work best with a team. Thank you for the additional thought you put into this forum.

Yolanda, The same approach we use for our students could work for their parents as well. When a student or parent communicates that the cost of tuition is more than they expected, a great question to ask is 'compared to what?' The answer they provide will give you a point of reference so that you know what resources you need to utilize to meet the challenge. As you point out, sometimes they simply don't understand and need additional information to bring clarity to the situation. Give it a try and let us know how it works for you. Dr. Jean… >>>

So if I understand your comment, the environment doesn't necessarily influence your motivation to lead but the environment could impact how you respond? Do you have an example of this? Dr. Jean Norris
