Activity

Bryan, Dr. Joe Pace from The Pacific Institute talks to instructors about having an intelligent heart. Our goal as instructors is to create a safe learning environment that invites student questions. Instructors do not need to be on a student's Facebook page but we do need to ensure we earn their trust and respect. They also need to know we care and are not robots. Teach with compassion and conviction at the same time. James Jackson

Harold, good use of groups. A single student may be overwhelmed learning the background of 49 other students but getting to know 8 to 9 others is much more attainable. James Jackson
Jim, awesome exercise. Getting students involved in establishing the rules of,the classroom make for easier methods of classroom control. You now have set the stage to remind them of "our class rules" versus just your class rules. Thanks for sharing. James Jackson

Patricia, success can be a learned skill and one that needs formal attention within the curriculum. What actions do you take within your own lesson plans to ensure your students experience some early success while learning the skills they will need to solve more complicated problems later? Thanks for anything you can share. James Jackson

Shelly, you are an expert simply through your experiences so never sell yourself short. No one knows it all so do not confuse the two. You can be an expert and still continually learn. This is what you want your students to eventually realize. Learning is life long and being an expert at anything implies you know the importance of learning more and more about your subject area. yingwei, nothing wrong being the "tough" teacher as long as your students respect you and not fear you. Students tend to like structure and enforcement of rules even though they may not always show their appreciation in any given moment. James Jackson
Ruth, great points. Not sure I have seen an abundance of wealthy instructors but the happiest and most successful tend to follow your comments. Getting paid any amount of money for something you enjoy is truly fulfilling. We need they pay to conduct our lives but we are happy as we watch our students succeed. James Jackson
John, great technique and gets students active and they become participants of the curriculum versus just observers. James Jackson

Renee, assessments have their place in the learning and subject delivery models. The critical factor is to not focus a majority of a grade on just a few instruments. If students know they can make up for missed questions or if a bad test does not impact their grade then you can better manage the fear associated with tests. What would be wrong with a weekly assessment that does not count against a student but is used to prepare for other assessments? Practice makes perfect so by removing the fear of damaging a grade the instructor can have frequent testing… >>>
