oliver, always be fair but firm and provide a sense of personal attention. Most students just want to be acknowledged and have their basic needs met. As long as they feel you are being considerate to their needs they will tend to respect your needs as the leader of the classroom. James Jackson
Michael, fantastic points. I my own career, I have actually recorded my own classroom sessions and have requested various peers and associates to provide me feedback on how I can continually improve my classroom management and presentation skills. Being prepared is the single most significant practice an instructor can actually control. James Jackson

Jeffrey, thanks for sharing and I agree 100%. The time that each student gets with their peers and the personal attention they can get from their instructors will provide the greatest dividends in achieving the learning outcomes. The best curriculum and resources alone will accomplish nothing if the quality of instruction and personal attention are not provided. James Jackson

Carl, every student is different yet all students need some basic things from us as instructors. If we can be the gold standard for them to model against then the discipline and classroom management will be less of a distraction and just become a norm that is just expected. It is all about attitude, professionalism and no matter how you cut it, hard work. James Jackson

Robert, great point and really hits home with the importance of presence and an true understanding of your environment. We all have days that are better than others and it can be a challenge to bring a high level of energy into each and every classroom setting. Yet this is what is really critical to keep your students focused and for you as the instructor to model the way for your students. As leaders of our classrooms, we need to put our personal lives on hold and provide 100% focus and attention on our students when in their presence. They… >>>

Julie, inspect what you expect but at the same time model the way so your students always know where they stand and where they need to go. James Jackson

Mark, thanks for sharing this important technique. How the instructor sets the stage on the first day can often times decide the outcomes for the remainder of the course. James Jackson
Debra, looks like you have things well in control. One thing to further consider is how her fear of tests may also manifest into other anxieties that could hinder her from seeking out and obtaining employment once she graduates. What groups are you working with to ensure the student is ready to leave the comfortable environment of the institution once she graduates? Thanks for anything you share. James Jackson
Lois, well stated. For those looking for a power trip, work in corporate america. If you are going to be working in Higher Education, the focus needs to be on the student. James Jackson
Kevin, trust and respect must be earned, it cannot be commanded so I tend to agree with your statements. Too many instructors feel they have earned the right to be respected because of their title, or letters after their name. No one is entitled to anything and all things must be earned no matter where you sit on the organizational chart. James Jackson
