Students need structure. Students will subconsciously sense when a plan or structure is weak or failing. Planning ahead will help the teacher and the student learn and teach as expected. Having a structured learning and teaching process, like "I do, we do, you do," is much like the fabrication process I developed in the industry. Taking an approach that is tested and trusted will confirm the teacher's place and confidence at the front of the class.

I'm excited to create engaging approaches to formative assessments with the students. I expect to spend more time engaging with the students to ensure they are learning more than what they will be tested on. Summative assessments are ideal for meeting academic standards and degree requirements, but formative learning will morph into the skills that will give an edge to future leaders.

Not only do we need to connect with the student we need to help them connect with their own interests. They may want to study drafting but don't want to do it as a career. That's ok, but as instructors we can help students find their passion and aim it toward a goal that aligns with their desired skills. We can help them set goals and realistic expectations to best utilize their education.

Don't be scared, be responsible. Yes, accidents happen, we need to be prepared to properly act without fear of negligence. Teach and prepare students to be accountable and responsible for themselves and each other.

One of the most effective ways I have been able to teach is by making a connection with the learner. I refer to this as getting to know those you teach. Student need authentic teachers and teachers need to know the authentic student to best meet the student's learning needs.

While CTE teachers are experts in their fields they may have difficulty making, what can be, a drastic change in career. I hope to build strong and lasting relationships with fellow teachers and colleagues.

Students need authentic interaction, but at the same time they need a leader that isn't afraid to take charge and teach. My most valued take away is the expectation and really, the need to set boundaries. Working with people, and especially young people is stressful and demanding. The students need us ready the teach and guide learning. Boundaries help us do that.

We may say that many of the related careers have existed for a long time, but the emergence of CTE specific programs has helped society expand beyond a traditional "parent teaches child," (Skills and knowledge passed through family) approach as we may have had in the past. This module has shown me that over many years a focused and academic approach to teaching skills is not only needed but has helped drive growth and innovation. I will use what I've learned to support the understanding and growth of CTE programs generally.
