I had a student cry because I was covering a class on short notice that I had not taught before; and was not prepared, it was a struggle for me to deliver the proper information in a clear and concise manner. I made the mistake (which I knew) by stating I am also still learning and this is new to me as well. I know it had the potential to devalue my intruction but I wasn't sure what else to say at the time other than encouraging and letting them know I am here to support them and will always… >>>

Have a student support plan in place for those struggling along. Document everything.

Use it wisely cards are a great way to keep the class focused and reduce center stage students from taking up the whole class and allowing others room to participate

Have clear expectations set in place for students

Taking notes and recording lectures are great ways to improve effective communication toward students. Check with each student on their progress.

Get to know each student and don't overwhelm them on the first day.

Show up early to be prepared and get a good gauge of the class before it starts. Have a checklist.

Engauge and read the class. Know what is appropriate, be the example and encourage students.
