The biggest take away from this module is the attention span of the average human is 10-15 minutes. Breaking apart the lecture to reflect this point and incorporating some technical applications and/ or review of points made will contribute positively to student success. Additionally, familiarizing oneself with the tools to incorporate all learning styles will ensure the entire groups' success. 

 

A commonality in all of these modules as it relates to student success is what you contribute personally. Students rely heavily on first impressions to determine how they will relate to the instructor as well as their peers. Greeting students with a smile helps send a message that you're excited about having them in the class. Learning their names expeditiously also conveys a message that you care about them as an individual. Defining clear expectations help the students to create a pathway that will inevitably lead to success. 

 

I've learned quite a bit in this planning and preparation module. The biggest take away is a famous quote that says proper planning prevents poor performance. Aside from those first-day jitters, instructors should be prepared prior to the class start time with clearly defined instructional objectives and a lesson plan that reflects the syllabus. The syllabus is an informal contract between the instructor and the student that informs the students of what they can expect from the instructor and the course; as well as what is expected of them. The Five C's were a huge takeaway. Being credible, candid, compassionate, committed and clear/concise is a great summary of instructor expectancy. 

Instructor Competency: Technical. Professional. Personal. 

A key ingredient to student success is in the instructor's ability to establish rapport. In the short clip from the Harvard discussion, he mentioned to not try and convince the students that you're the smartest in the room, and to instead, convince them that you love the subject and that you love them!
