About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

David, Been there and didn't like it anymore than the students. Last session I taught in a break room, where students and faculty came in to warm up their food and get things out of the community frig. I and the students complained but nothing was done. We were just told to "tough it out". Anyway I was determined to make the best of it so we focused on the content of the course and how we could learn in spite of the circumstances. The class gelled and it was a great experience for us all. Now when I see… >>>

Monica, These are the characteristics of my students as well and as a result I use the same approach as you are using. It has proven to be very successful for me as I am able to help the students integrate the information into their working memories. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Monica, This is a balanced approach to instruction that is valuable to the learning of your students. They get to use their intelligences and learning preferences as they progress through the content. This gives them varied learning opportunities that help to keep them engaged. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Misty, Not only talk the walk but also walk the walk as the old saying goes. We need to model the behavior we want from our students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Cynthia, Good to hear about your teaching strategies that have been successful. This is good information for other instructors to have as they do their instructional planning. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Jim, Your last sentence is an important one. Yes, we do bring our personalities to the classroom and as a result we are "selling" both content and professionalism to our students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Jay, This is very important to remember so you can create a connection with the students and help them feel accepted and comfortable in the class. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Jim, Good integration of different instructional delivery methods. You are bringing your personality to the classroom with energy and enthusiasm plus passion for your field. This is a win win for learning. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
David, I like your last statement. There is a big difference between just lecturing and teaching. Teaching can involve lecturing but it needs to involve learning. The key is getting the blend between sharing content and achieving integration and application of that content. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Monica, This is the case with my students as well. The majority are visual learners so I strive to make a lot of my content visual in presentation and application. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
