About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Suzanne, Anytime you can offer application and relevancy in your instructional approach you are helping your students to see the value of what you are teaching. Live work on the shelter animals gives direct experience that shows the students the ROI that they are getting from their efforts. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Sami, I use games in my class and my students really like the competition. One of their favorites is Jeopardy. I use it when reviewing for upcoming tests. The students really get fired up in answering the questions and wining points for their team. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Harriet, They sure to. As you know they really perk up when you share some experience you have had that is related to the topic being discussed and you tell them how you handled a problem or person. This gives relevancy to what is being studied. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Daniel, I like your comfortable and easy going way of conducting your class sessions. Enjoying a laugh together as a result of a story shared is a good way to help students refocus as well as the instructor. Then you can go back to the content and move the class forward. Teaching as well as learning can and should be fun. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Charles, So true and so important to continued teaching success. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Harriet, So true and so important to student success. If they know they have an approachable instructor that cares about them and their success the stage has been set for the development of rapport. This also enhances student retention significantly. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Daniel, The more you can do this the greater the impact on the students. They see both application and relevancy when they see the course content in context. This increases their ROI and motivation. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Christie, That is where confidence comes into play. By being prepared with a good lesson plan and practiced demo you are ready to go. This sets the stage for a successful learning experience for the students and you build from there. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Daniel, I like your approach. Variety in delivery is very important in keeping students engaged. You are doing so with your different delivery methods while appealing to the different learning preferences. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Brendon, Students as you know like examples and stories about their field. They help the students to see relevancy to what they are studying. The message you share in relation to wages they can earn reinforces why they are in school. The combination of the two areas can be a powerful motivator for them as well. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
