About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Marilyn, Right you are. What are some strategies you use that have worked well in getting students to see themselves as a viable part of the class and become invested in the learning process? Thanks for sharing with us. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Diane, Well said and so true. The more connections we can help them make between the course content and their lives the more they will retain and use. One of the fun parts of being an instructor is seeing this happen. Ah-ha moments keep us coming back to the classroom over and over again. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Arthur, Good ideas for student engagement. The more involved they are the more they are going to retain the content being presented. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Garrett, This is a good strategy. Students like a change of pace and variety in their learning. You are offering that with your method. This keeps them more engaged in longer session classes. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Kathy, Right you are. By being prepared you can manage the learning environment with confidence and authority. So much better than trying to scramble at the last minute to find something to present to the class. I teach with some of these types and they are always in a panic plus the students don't respect them. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Kisha, Good way to balance expectations with reality. You are setting the standard for the course but you are also letting students know they can talk with you when something comes up in their lives that could present a problem with their studies. This is the foundation for you earning their respect. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Mike, I like the way you set the stage for learning success. You are modeling expectations through your dress and planning. The students see that this is a course that has much to offer by a well prepared instructor. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Arthur, My expectations and outcomes from the introduction time at the beginning of the course as well. Good way to create a foundation to build on in the course. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Guy, I agree with you about the good feeling you get when you know you have "nailed" a lesson and that all of your students were engaged. It is what keeps you coming back day after day as a teacher. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Gloria, This is an important part of "connecting the dots" for students. They start to see the end result of all their effort through the examples you are giving them. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
