About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Antoinette, You have a very comfortable supportive way of keeping your students engaged and moving forward with their learning. I know they appreciate this approach very much. Keep up the effort because you are impacting lives everyday. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Joseph, I am sure your students like to help with the demos. I know mine do. They work really hard to get all of the content procedures down so they are prepared for their demonstrations. They really get into them and can't wait until their turn comes around again. Good method to use. Gary Dr. Gary Meers

Many career colleges are making service learning a part of their curriculum.  Service learning is not new but it still is not known by a lot of colleges and students.  Service learning is sometimes confused with community service.  Community service has the goal of helping a sector of a community to complete a project or activity.  There is not credit associated with the completion of the project, only the satisfaction of having participated in the effort of helping others.  Service learning can have the same goal but in addition participating students receive credit for their work and the project is… >>>

Rebecca, Based upon the research I have been doing in multiple intelligences for the past 25 years this is true. I would suggest you visit some of the websites on multiple intelligences to gain additional insight in this area. I will be glad to communicate with you further on MI assessments and their applications. Just let me know. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Theodore, By offering variety you will be hitting on the different learning preferences of students and this is very important. You will start to see how different groups of students respond to the different deliveries and then you can target them with even more opportunities within their preference areas. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Douglas, Application and relevancy are two critical components of the teaching process. Your approach gives students a chance to see both and that increases the value of the content you are sharing. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Discussion Comment
Douglas, The advantage of the 3X5 cards is that every student will have input and not just the more vocal ones. The key is to get their input no matter how it is solicited. Keep up the good work. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Douglas, I like your simple, comfortable and supportive approach to working with students. I know they respect you for what you are doing and that the development of rapport with them comes as a part of the effort you are putting forth. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Ghia, One of the enjoyable parts of being an instructor is working with students. Developing rapport with them and helping them make progress toward their career goal is such a great return for our efforts as learning leaders. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Shukla, Good plan. I use a checklist myself for the reasons you state. I want to make sure I don't forget something or don't secure a needed piece of equipment, etc. A checklist reduces my anxiety and stress because I know I have completed my planning for the course. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
