About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Arthur, Good strategy. Students like variety and to be involved. The more you can incorporate both into your delivery the more engaged the students are going to be. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Jeremy, You are practicing a host of modeling factors that show the students where they will be at the end of the course if they follow your example. This helps them to see that standard that they need to work toward. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
ANDREA, So true and so important. We are setting the standard for our field so we need to illustrate that standard in all of our conduct and interactions. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Vance, Not only are you the instructor but you are a good resource for the students since you have gone through the same course and hold the certificate as a result of your success. You can help them to see the value of the content because you have lived it. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Sandra, Right you are. This is what it is all about for the students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers

Sandra, I like your example of the "Wheels on the bus go round and round." Hadn't thought of it in those terms but teaching the same course over and over can become much like the song. I try something new in terms of an assignment, activity or content each time I teach a course to keep my own excitement level up. I'm not sure how the new element is going to work so I am excited to see it unfold and get the student feedback. This makes the course fun for me and helps me retain my focus. Gary Dr.… >>>

Maikel, Sounds like an enjoyable and most profitable class for your students. You are offering instruction in ways that engaged the students for the duration of each class. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Maikel, If your students can start to think this way you will have accomplished a lot with them. The majority of what we all do revolves around problem solving and critical thinking. The more skill they have in these areas the better prepared they are going to be. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Liset, As you know students love stories about their field. Sharing your own career experiences is a good way to keep their interest. I use a lot of guest speakers to reinforce what I am teaching them because the guest speakers tell it like it is. After they speak my classes are always motivated for a period of time because they can see how the content being offered is real. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Liset, Application and relevancy are two very important words to use when doing instructional planning. Through guest speakers, demonstrations and case studies both words are being defined for the students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
