About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Tessa, Hope you receive some good insight from beginning instructors in the forum. Good preparation and organization will go a long way in helping you get settled into the course. Also, use an ice breaker at the beginning of the class so the students get to know each other and share some laughs. You will be amazed at how comfortable you all will get with each other very quickly. Then you can complete the introductions and start outlining the course expectations. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Benjamin, Well said. This is what being an effective instructor needs to be about. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Carol, You are making your content real through application. This is what good teaching is about. The students can see the relevancy to what you are showing them as building blocks in their career development. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Alejandro, Well said. We need to bring our excitement and A game to class each time it meets. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Jeff, My students can't wait for review time because of the games. They get real competitive during the games which greatly increases their content retention and improves their test scores. Have fun with the games. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Sean, It is fun as a teacher to rediscover some of the strategies that worked for us in our early days of teaching. Trying them again can be fun and refreshing as we prepare our instructional delivery. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Sue, I like the way you help the students to get settled into the course and feeling comfortable about how it is going to be conducted. This is so important to keep the students engaged, focused and coming back. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Godwin, The more you can connect the dots between content and application the greater the application process is going to be for your students. Case studies and examples really help to reinforce content for students as you know. Keep up the good work. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Donna, I like your approach to student centered instructional planning. You are basing your delivery on coordinated outcomes based upon your students and your expectations. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Jennifer, Thank you for these comments about a first impression. So true and so important for instructors to establish the first class meeting. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
