About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Marshall, A lot of career success depends on the ability to problem solve and thinking critically. I like this strategy for helping your students to see the big picture. I am sure this was not only a fun exercise but one that got them to think about how they will see things in the future. Thanks for sharing this with us. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Kelly, This connection is important for students to know about. Often they think they are the only ones that have ever gone to school under stressful and challenging circumstances. Knowing their instructor has gone through the same challenges gives them a model to follow. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Joyce, Good planning to make sure you get through all of the critical points that need to be covered the first day. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Joyce, Very good point. Clear and concise communication reduces student frustration and keeps the class forward focused. This way they know what assignments are due and when so they don't spend their time wondering but instead spend it working. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Allen, What a great example of relevance and application. This is such a motivating factor for students to see and experience in their lives outside of class. Thanks for sharing it with us. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Marla, You have used three very important words in relation to teaching-care-concern-support. These three are such a part of both student and teaching success because all those involved respect that each student is valued. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Ronald, I agree as well about instructor enthusiasm. We need to bring our passion for our field and our enthusiasm for sharing it to class each time. This helps to keep the students engaged and focused on what is being taught. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Paula, Yes, it does. This way you know how to direct your instructional delivery and support in relation to their learning preferences. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Marla, Good reasons for knowing why students are enrolled. I like knowing this information as well for the reasons you cited. This helps me to be able to customize my approach with them as we move through the course. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Sherri, Thank you for sharing this great story. This is what teaching is all about. We need to be their support and mentors as they work through their program. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
