About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Joseph, You make a good point that is often forgotten by students that are training for a new career after being successful in one previously. They are starting over as hard as that may be but with their life experiences and a strong work ethic they soon will be moving up the career ladder. This is why the reminders are so important. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Thomas, Great example of an alternative teaching technique that has a lasting impact. Thank you for sharing it with us. I know it is going to be tried in many classrooms. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Gayle, They keep students focused because they never know when they might occur, thus the name pop quiz but also they give you feedback on student status just as you mentioned. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Christopher, Great use of technology to reduce student anxiety as well as letting them know support is there if they will ask for it. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Grisel, Yes, they will so we need to be prepared and ready to "sell" ourselves and our course. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Claudia, So true so that first effort needs to be a very good one. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Allison, Thank you for sharing this success story with us. I have done a lot of research on multiple intelligences and learning styles and I am surprised like you that you would have a class with 50% auditory. This traditionally a low area for career college students. Great job of adapting your instruction to meet the current group of students, this is what good teaching is all about. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Qadar, Good example of the value of keeping the objectives in front of the students throughout the course. This is important for all of us instructors to remember. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Gayle, Sorry to hear this. We all have classes like this. Just keep forward focused on your next group of students and how you can engage them in the learning process. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
JoAnn, I like your check recheck method. This leaves no doubt as to what the course expectations are and how the students can meet them. It is a matter of building on them from this point forward. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
