About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Marisela, It seems all students like to hear stories from their instructors. I think it helps to make the content real for them. In addition, they learn that you have actually earned a living doing what you are teaching them. This is a surprise to many of them. They don't seem to realize that it is your experience that got you to the position of teaching. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Marisela, So true so we need to bring our A game to the classroom each time we enter. To do less is unfair to our students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Maryellen, This establishes a comfort level for you and your students and as a result I am sure they ask many questions and you have good discussions. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Cristina, What are some games that you use that have been successful in getting your students engaged? Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Mina, I agree about enthusiasm and excitement. If you bring both to the classroom it spreads. The students start to become a part of the learning process as a result of the fact that you are excited and enthused about what you are teaching them. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Mary, This approach is so important for adult learners and their success. Small units of information that they can hear, internalize and then use greatly increases their comfort level as well as retention. These small successes quickly grow into bigger successes and their self confidence expands from there. Keep up the good work. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Ty, Good point about the matter of success being a mind set. Many students come to the classroom already defeated so they need to be encouraged and supported in a way that will help them have success if they are willing to put forth the effort. This is what will keep them in school. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Carl, Thank you for sharing your own life experiences in coping with and overcoming this learning challenge. Your determination to be successful has taken you very far in life resulting in you now being able to impact the lives of others through your teaching. I commend you for your effort and dedication to helping the next generation of professionals enter your field. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Marisela, So true and so critical to getting a class started off in a positive way. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Thomas, Variety is the key and you are offering such with this approach. Good way to keep your students engaged and focused on what is being taught. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
