About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Latoya, You have a great rotation going with your class format. This way you are keeping your students engaged and applying what is being taught. This is what expands student content retention greatly. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kerry, I hear you loud and clear. That rule is established the first class meeting and enforced throughout the sessions. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Charlene, Written like a true professional educator. I commend you for your willingness to adapt to the needs of your students. This is what being a professional educator is all about. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Gail, Instructors have to be flexible and you are being such with your approach. Read your students and then customize your approach to meet their needs. By doing so you and your students are going to enjoy the teaching/learning experience. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.

Kerry, Putting a schedule in a syllabus is an individual choice for an instructor. I don't put the schedule in my syllabus. I give a Class Calendar out with the topics that are going to be covered, field trips, guest speakers, etc. on it. By keeping it separate in the form of a handout I can make adjustments on it as needed due to weather or other factors and the syllabus remains unchanged. This is important because I want the students to know that what is in the syllabus is what guides us for the duration of the course. With… >>>

Tammie, You are a case study in adult learning. I commend you for all your effort and passion for being successful. You will be a great example for your students because you have been where they are and they can see that you are able to relate to their situations. This is such valuable support for adult learners to have. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tom, I really like your list of factors for engaging students in the learning process while helping them to be motivated by what they are learning. This list is going to be valuable to other instructors as they come into the field of teaching. Thanks for sharing it. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Christopher, Glad the information was helpful. Your students are going to benefit from your new knowledge and increased effort to expand your instructional expertise. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Edward, You make a number of very good points concerning motivation and reinforcement. Reality is that everyone makes mistakes. Learning from these mistakes is what makes us better at what we do. Also, with the entitlement culture we have today with many of our students they feel that because they pay tuition they are entitled to an A. Receiving an earned D or F can be an eyeopener for them but that is real life and in the long run will show them how they can be successful through failure and increased effort.
