About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Kristen, So do mine and that is why I use them as well. These types of activities help to keep students engaged throughout the duration of the class sessions. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
David, I wish you much teaching success and many rewards from the impact you are going to have on the lives of your students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Robert, This is a good way to establish yourself as the learning leader while learning about the life experiences your students are bringing into the class this session. A good way to start off a new class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Bronzel, Good point about helping them to stay engaged and focused on the course and the desired outcomes. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Bronzel, I use them in my class as well for the reasons you state. They really help to get students involved in the class and working with each other. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Danielle, This is the way to show the students what the expectations are for the course in a clear and concise way. This is important for them to have as you know because you then can build off of the syllabus and the objectives. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kristen, You have that right. I always start a new class with this statement. "In this class courtesy is owed (meaning I will give you courtesy as a fellow human being), respect is earned and it goes two ways, my direction and yours and rapport is developed." This statement shows them how they can settle into the course and be successful if they are willing to put forth the effort. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tammy, So true. They see how they fit into the class and can get comfortable with the other students and you the instructor. This serves as the foundation for the development of respect and rapport. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Robert, Good way to a practical experience such as driving to and from work as a way to illustrate your approach to teaching and instructional delivery. You are getting to the same destination but you are taking a number of different routes to get there. As a result you are keeping your students engaged and focused on the content. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kristen, If you don't let them know the course objectives then they won't know what is going to be accomplished, how they are going to be held accountable or where the course is going. They need to be clear and concise so they can be understood by all. Thanks for making this good point. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
