About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

TIMOTHY, Good global approach to learning. You are showing both the big picture and the segments that are needed for learning success with your method. This helps the students to see the progress they are making in learning the content and competencies needed for career success. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Dena, This approach helps to validate the course content and shows the students how they can apply what they are learning. These stories are great motivators as well because they get the students excited about what they will experience when they enter the field. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Marilyn, Good way to approach your instructional planning. By knowing more about your students you are able to more accurately customize your delivery to meet their learning needs. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Michelle, Relevance and application need to be reinforced to and with the students. You are doing such when you share stories, examples and your own career experiences with your students. You are helping the students to connect the dots between course content and their field. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Discussion Comment
Qadar, Good strategies for using the feedback that is given for course improvement. Also, by "reading" the faces and body language of the students you are able to adjust your instructional delivery immediately to keep the students engaged. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Chad, They sure do and there are a number of ways to introduce learning breaks into the class via small groups, games and case studies. These are in addition to the regular breaks that are taken in a class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Marilyn, I think developing rapport with students is a very rewarding part of being an educator. By having rapport with them learning is enhanced plus I am welcoming them into my field upon completion of their program. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Aimee, If we educators don't bring our passion and enthusiasm to the class it isn't going to be there. Being excited about our field and teaching is one of the rewards of being paid to teaching and share about something that we love. This is a win win as far as I am concerned. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kelly, You make a number of very good points about what factors contribute to student success. As you say support groups are so important to the success factor. We need to be aware of how these support groups contribute to success and when they are absent provide support the best we can to help those students lacking support. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Chad, Yes, they can. We instructors just need to give them the support and guidance so they can keep forward focused in their learning. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
