About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Nazanin, Yes, they do. They create a foundation upon which to build the development of respect and rapport. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kurtis, Well said and right on target. This is the value of a well prepared syllabus for both the students and the instructor. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kurtis, Talking with colleagues, taking classes about instruction improvement, attending conferences, reading about best practices all contribute to more effective and efficient teaching as well as learning. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kit, Interaction with students is a great way to earn their respect and establish rapport with them as the course progresses. You make a good point about the value of this effort. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Terence, They are a great help to visual learners. They also help auditory learners because they help them physically organize their materials in a visual way that makes sense to them after they have heard a lecture on the content. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Shannon, Thank you for sharing how graphic organizers can benefit students in your field. I know this information will be helpful to other instructors in the health field. There is so much to learn and the more supports that students can use the higher their retention of the content is going to be. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Terence, Student input is so important for the reason you state. We need to know what they are thinking plus they need to know we are listening to them. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Laura, Right you are about it being a win win situation with this approach. A blend enables the students to internalize content at a much higher rate than if just one venue is used. Also, blending helps to keep them engaged for longer periods of time. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Laura, I teach from 4 until 10 pm so I can relate to what you are saying about evening students. I like the way you let them transition from work to student. Letting them relax a bit and have some fun sets them up for learning at a higher level than if you started off lecturing to them. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Brant, I agree. We need to bring enthusiasm for teaching and passion about our content. This will help the students to see that we are serious about what we are teaching and that we are helping them to move forward toward their career goals. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
