About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

CAROL, They have to be able to internalize course content or it has no value to them. This is why your approach is so powerful for the students to become engaged and focused. You are showing them how your content will aid in the shaping of their future career success. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Romana, Your approach I know gets them excited. Just sharing the fact that you helped a person to know that they had early stage oral cancer sets the stage for engagement and excited on the part of students. Your skill and expertise may have saved the life of a person. This is a powerful message to send to students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Khayyam, I think this is a good way to connect the course content to the lives of students. They start to see the value of the content in relation to the life experiences they have had. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
John, Success stories are powerful motivators. They help students to see the value of the content and expertise being offered in classes in relation to their career goals. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Discussion Comment
CAROL, Thank you for these comments. They are helpful due to the unique aspects of how you deliver instruction and get student feedback. You have developed a way to benefit from the feedback even in an online situation. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Discussion Comment
Dan, I use the 3X5 card feedback method myself and it is extremely helpful to me. I can target the comments and then work to improve my instructional efforts in these areas. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Discussion Comment
John, Student feedback is valuable for instructor growth. Reviewing both the positive and negative comments gives a foundation for instructional improvement just as you have said. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
CAROL, You make a number of very good points about why students are in school. I am amazed that we have to take attendance and follow up with students when they are paying $10,000 for the education we are offering. Never the less, we do because even though they are paying to go to school they forget sometimes why they are there. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Khayyam, My experience as well. I couldn't wait to get back to their class so I could learn more. This is the kind of teacher I strive to be. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Chloe, Having passion for one's field and excitement about sharing the field with others creates a formula for success. We all like being around people that enjoy what they do and students are no exception. They catch enthusiasm from us. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
